Punctuation: Apostrophes for contraction and possession

(9)
The resource is split into two main sections: An animation shows how two words are joined together using an apostrophe to form a contraction, before the children test their knowledge with an interactive activity. An animation explains using an apostrophe correctly to show possession before the children use what they have learned to answer multichoice questions

Punctuation: Apostrophes for contraction

(1)
Apostrophes are used for shortened forms of words or to mark possession. Of the two, the use of apostrophes for contraction is most readily understood. As long as pupils securely grasp the idea that the apostrophe takes the place of a missing letter or letters, they are quick to position it correctly. They should be made aware that contracted forms are more appropriate for speech than for writing.

Punctuation: Using apostrophes for possession

(1)
The emphasis of this resource is on working orally, so that pupils can see themselves as owners and understand what the apostrophe, in this context, is communicating. The final activity recaps on the use of the apostrophe to signal a missing letter and provides an entertaining game encouraging pupils to make a distinction between the apostrophes of possession and contraction. Throughout the lesson, the emphasis is on collaborative learning, with pupils comparing their answers and justifying their conclusions.

Dayfdd drops a goal - rugby poem

(1)
Dafydd Drops a Goal is a poem about rugby. It tells of a young boy dropped to the substitutes' bench during an important cup match. He comes on to play during the dying minutes of the game and saves it with a drop goal. The unit was specifically written to provide pupils, particularly boys, with some challenging material that would perhaps change their attitude towards poetry. Ideal for years 5 and 6.
